Acute mortality in sand martins (Riparia riparia) and barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) linked to dermal or inhalation pyrethroid insecticide exposure

Current risk assessment of chemicals for birds and mammals focusses mainly on oral exposure routes and does not adequately consider the impact of the dermal or inhalation exposure routes. This study on acute death of two swallow species in the Netherlands demonstrates that these exposure routes can be of crucial relevance for some species or life stages.

MIND: a proposed strategic and collaborative platform for advancing chemical environmental risk assessment

How do we move from laboratory innovation to real-world environmental protection? The answer lies in collaboration. The newly proposed MIND platform serves as a strategic hub to align research with regulatory policy, ensuring that advanced, animal-free, and systems-based risk assessments are effectively implemented.

Co-authored by experts from the SYBERAC project and PARC, this initiative marks a major step toward the goals of the European Green Deal and the long-term protection of global biodiversity.

A systems-based analysis to rethink the European environmental risk assessment of regulated chemicals using pesticides as a pilot case

Advancing environmental risk assessment (ERA) is essential to addressing the landscape-scale and long-term impacts of pesticides. Commissioned by EFSA, the 2022 PERA Roadmap proposes a transition from traditional substance-by-substance paradigms toward a systems-based approach.

By using pesticides as a pilot area, the roadmap aims to resolve current data fragmentation and bridge the "innovation-to-regulation" gap. Implementing these integrative steps requires strengthened collaboration across scientific and regulatory domains to meet European sustainability and "One Health" goals.
